The beef, the buns, the cheese, the bacon, the potatoes — even the pop. If we can buy it from a neighbor instead of a warehouse, that is what we do.

Every patty goes onto a screaming-hot flat-top and gets smashed thin so the whole edge turns to crust. Nothing sits under a heat lamp waiting for you.

Nate and Bird built this kitchen themselves, and one of them is almost always the person handing your order out the window.

Locally Sourced

Almost everything but the salt comes from a neighbor.

Southern Minnesota grows the beef, the potatoes and the dairy that the rest of the country eats. It seemed strange to run a burger trailer here and order our food off a national truck.

So we buy from locally owned providers instead — the beef, the buns, the cheese, the bacon, the potatoes, and the pop. It costs us more. It tastes like it.

Bought from locally owned Minnesota providers rather than a national distributor.

The cheese

Bongards American cheese — a farmer-owned Minnesota dairy cooperative. Local cheddar on the 507 Smash.

The buns

Bought local, and soft but sturdy enough to hold two patties and a pile of onions.

The potatoes

Bought local, fried to order, and salted on the way out the window.

The pop

Northern Soda Company craft soda, made in Minnesota. Six flavors, including Sunday Purple and Due North.

Our Story

Nate & Bird

Nate and Daniel — everybody calls him Bird — have been best friends a long time. They had the same argument most people from around here have had at some point: why is it so hard to get a genuinely great burger in a place that raises the cattle?

The Farmer's Son is their answer. One flat-top, one press, a short menu, and ingredients bought from people they can call by name. No freezer shortcuts, no eighteen-item menu, no corporate supply contract. Just two friends who think a smash burger made from local beef is worth doing properly.

Pull up to the window and you will almost certainly be handed your food by one of them.
